What Are CEREC Crowns?
A CEREC crown is a custom ceramic crown that is designed, milled, and placed in a single visit. CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. The technology uses a digital scan of your tooth, computer-aided design, and an in-office milling unit to create your crown while you wait.
For many patients, that means no temporary crown, no second appointment, and no uncomfortable impression trays. You leave with a strong, natural-looking restoration that protects your tooth and blends in with your smile. At Darren Gonzalez, DDS, same-day crowns are part of our approach to restorative dentistry, which respects your time as much as your oral health.
When Might You Need a
CEREC Crown?
A crown covers and strengthens a tooth that can no longer hold up well on its own. Dr. Gonzalez may recommend a same-day crown if you have:
A cracked or broken tooth
A crown holds the tooth together and helps keep the crack from spreading.
A large cavity or failing filling
When too much tooth structure is lost, a crown offers more support than another filling.
A tooth treated with a root canal
Back teeth in particular often need a crown afterward to protect them from fracture.
Worn or discolored teeth
A ceramic crown can restore shape, size, and color for a more even smile.

How Does the Same-Day Crown Process Work?
Exam and tooth preparation
We start by examining the tooth and numbing the area for comfort. Dr. Gonzalez then removes any decay or damaged structure and shapes the tooth so the crown fits securely.
Digital scan
Instead of messy impression material, we use a small intraoral camera to capture a precise 3D image of your tooth and bite.
Design and milling
Using that scan, your crown is designed on screen to match the shape of your natural teeth. A milling unit then carves it from a solid block of tooth-colored ceramic, usually while you relax in the chair.
Final placement
Once the crown is ready, we check the fit, bite, and color, make any small refinements, and bond it permanently in place. Most patients walk out with their finished crown the same day.
How Do I Take Care of My CEREC Crown?
Brush and floss daily
Clean around the crown just like your natural teeth, paying close attention to the gumline where plaque tends to collect.
Avoid using teeth as tools
Opening packages or biting fingernails can chip any tooth, including a ceramic crown.
Protect against grinding
If you clench or grind at night, ask us about a custom night guard to protect your crown and natural teeth.
Keep up with checkups
Regular cleanings and exams help us monitor the crown and the tooth underneath so small issues can be addressed early.
CEREC Crowns vs. Traditional Crowns: How Do I Choose?
Both options restore a damaged tooth, but the experience is different. A traditional crown is usually made in an outside lab, which means two visits and a temporary crown for a couple of weeks in between. A CEREC crown is completed in one appointment, so there’s no temporary to loosen or break.
That said, same-day crowns aren’t ideal for every case. Some situations, such as certain complex restorations or specific material needs, may still call for a lab-made crown. Dr. Gonzalez will review your tooth, bite, and goals, then explain the trade-offs so you can choose with confidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. CEREC crowns are made from high-strength ceramic designed to handle everyday chewing forces. With good care, they offer durability comparable to lab-made ceramic crowns.
Most same-day crown visits take about two to three hours from start to finish, including preparation, design, milling, and placement.
Each crown is shaded to blend with your surrounding teeth, so it looks and reflects light much like natural enamel.
With daily care and regular checkups, a CEREC crown can last many years. Habits like grinding and your overall oral health also play a role in its lifespan.
